Unlock Piano
A child playing piano, lost in the music

Our Story

At Unlock Piano — we believe that music can change a child's world. And we're passionate about removing every barrier that stands between families and that transformation.

How It Started

Hi, I'm Kalaish — founder and principal teacher at Unlock Piano. A multi-instrumentalist and professional musician, I have been playing piano for 16 years and teaching for over 7. I was nominated to perform at the Opera House for Encore in 2021, have studied music at the University of New South Wales, and now perform professionally around Sydney.

What I love most is seeing children build confidence and discover the joy of music just like I have. That's why I created Unlock Piano — to make music education accessible to every child. I believe every child deserves the opportunity to develop a lifelong skill and love of learning music.

What Makes Us Different

Most piano lessons ask families to come to them. We come to you. Most require you to buy a piano first. We bring one with us. Most make you commit before you know if it's right. We let you try, completely free, with no strings attached.

But it's more than just convenience. When lessons happen in your home, something shifts. Children relax. They're in their own space, surrounded by familiar things. They're more willing to try, more open to learning, more themselves. And when the piano stays with you between lessons, practice becomes natural—not a chore, but something they want to do.

That's the difference. We're not just teaching piano. We're creating an environment where children can discover what music means to them, on their own terms, in their own space, without any barriers getting in the way.

"We started Unlock Piano because we believe every child deserves the chance to fall in love with music—not just the children whose families can afford a piano, or who live near a music school, or who are certain they'll stick with it. Every child. That's why we bring the piano to you, why we eliminate the upfront costs, and why we make it easy to try. Because music shouldn't be a privilege. It should be a possibility."

Our Values

Teacher Selection

Kalaish doesn't just hire teachers—he finds the right ones. Every Unlock Piano teacher goes through a careful selection process, because it's not enough to be a great musician. You have to be someone who can connect with children, who can make learning feel like discovery, who can see potential and help it grow. Every teacher is WWCC-verified, musically qualified, and most importantly, someone who genuinely cares about your child's journey. When they walk through your door, they're not just teaching piano. They're building confidence, sparking curiosity, and creating moments that matter.

Accessibility

We believe the cost of buying a piano shouldn't prevent anyone from learning. That's why we provide a full-size, 88-key weighted electric piano at no cost for all students who need one. The piano stays in your home for as long as your child is learning, so they can practice between lessons and really fall in love with playing. No upfront investment. No wondering if you should buy one. Just focus on learning, and we'll take care of the rest.

The Home Advantage

There's something powerful about learning in your own space. Children who might be shy in a music school open up at home. Parents who might feel like observers become part of the journey. And when the piano stays with you, practice happens naturally—not because it's scheduled, but because it's there, inviting, part of your daily life. We've watched students who struggled with focus find it at the piano. We've seen confidence bloom. We've heard parents say their child is different—more patient, more willing to try new things, more themselves. That's what happens when music becomes accessible, when barriers come down, and when learning happens where children feel most at home.

Why Music Matters

Music isn't just about learning notes or playing songs. It's about confidence. It's about that moment when a child sits down at the piano and realizes they can create something beautiful. It's about discipline that feels like play, focus that feels like freedom, and achievement that builds from the inside out.

Kalaish has watched children transform through music. The shy kid who finds their voice. The restless child who discovers focus. The student who thought they weren't "musical" until they played their first song and realized they had it in them all along.

"Music gives children something that's uniquely theirs—a skill, a passion, a way to express themselves that stays with them forever."

That's what drives Unlock Piano. Not just teaching piano, but opening doors. Not just lessons, but possibilities. Because every child deserves the chance to discover what music can do for them.
